Built from wood. Designed for tomorrow.
Because the houses were planned and completed at different times (lodges 2014, chalets 2020), the sustainability and environmental measures differ in degree. In detail:
BergwaldLodges
planned 2014, first let 2016
- The solid log beams are Nordic pine, so the building material is 100% carbon neutral.
- The windows are triple-glazed and also made of solid wood.
- The house has a low-temperature gas condensing boiler combined with solar panels on the roof.
- Underfloor heating warms the ground floor and the bathrooms.
- We use LED lighting throughout.
- All large electrical appliances are energy-saving and therefore efficient.
BergwaldChalets
planned 2020, first let 2022

- The solid log beams are Nordic pine, so the building material is 100% carbon neutral.
- The windows are triple-glazed and also made of solid wood.
- The house has a low-temperature gas condensing boiler combined with solar panels on the roof.
- Underfloor heating warms the ground floor and the bathrooms.
- We use LED lighting throughout.
- All large electrical appliances are energy-saving and therefore efficient.
- Each of the 8 parking spaces has a wall box, so our guests can “charge while they sleep”. 😉
Note: we first considered a heat pump, but according to our energy consultant its efficiency at this altitude is 20% at most. The roofs do not face south either, which ruled out photovoltaics. A ground-source heat pump is not possible because Schierke is built on granite.
Certified destination
We are a partner of the programme for sustainable travel and may display its logo. Whenever you see this logo at a tourist destination, you can be sure that sustainability, transparency, regional sourcing and environmental and nature protection matter to the operators.
We also use certified climate-neutral linen.

Many talk, we act!
€5 per booked night goes to heiermann4future, the initiative we founded in 2019, to buy and plant trees in the Harz. Together with money from other donors, 50,000 trees have already been planted.
Climate change and all its consequences are on everyone’s lips. We, your hosts, want to make a small contribution too – and help save the Harz mountain forest. This almost pure spruce monoculture (a shallow-rooted tree) urgently needs to be enriched with broadleaf trees to become a mixed forest; only then can we get storm damage and the bark beetle under control. Broadleaf trees are perfect at absorbing CO₂.
Scientists also warn that sooner or later drought will cause a drinking water problem. Domestic washing machines use an average of 15 litres of drinking water per kilo of laundry. Our professional laundry, which supplies our climate-neutral rental linen, has certified a consumption of 4–5 litres per kilo.
So for bookings received from November 2019 we decided to introduce a few changes:
- Linen packages are included, leaving room in your boot for other nice things.
- For every night you book with us we donate €5 (€10 per night at Christmas and New Year) specifically to buy and plant broadleaf trees in the Harz mountain forest.
You support our project and become part of it when you book with us and recommend us and our initiative – on social media too, with the hashtag #heiermann4future. Take beautiful forest photos and tag them on Instagram.
